New findings on how dementia can be prevented

An international expert commission has recently published an overview of the factors that can influence one's risk of developing dementia.

According to the expert commission, 45% of all dementia cases can be prevented by addressing these 14 risk factors:

  1. Reducing diabetes
  2. Controlling and treating cholesterol levels
  3. Minimizing high blood pressure
  4. Quitting smoking
  5. Reducing obesity
  6. Lowering air pollution
  7. Preventing head injuries
  8. Preventing or treating depression
  9. Physical activity
  10. Minimizing alcohol intake
  11. Higher education or continuous cognitive activity
  12. Preventing and treating hearing problems
  13. Treating vision problems
  14. Increasing social interactions
