REAL AD Study Leader in the Media During the Swedish Brain Foundation’s Campaign: Research Advances Bring Hope for Future Alzheimer’s Patients
September 22, 2025In connection with World Alzheimer’s Month, Hjärnfonden has launched a major campaign to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease. In outlets such as Expressen, Dagens Nyheter, Helsingborgs Dagblad, and Sydsvenskan, REAL AD study leader Professor Michael Schöll contributes by highlighting the latest research advances, new diagnostic methods, and the development of drugs that may offer hope for future patients.
While the REAL AD study is ongoing, new drugs for Alzheimer’s disease are being developed, including one that was recently approved in Europe. This is particularly significant because early diagnosis, something the study is testing, is a prerequisite for these new treatments to provide real benefit to patients. Michael Schöll also emphasizes the importance of external contributions, including from Hjärnfonden, in order to carry out the study and drive research forward.
The goal is that the new diagnostic methods will in the future be implemented in healthcare in a simple and cost-effective way, so that more patients can gain timely access to the right treatment. With these research advances, there is also hope for a shift in attitudes that will allow new findings to be put into practice more quickly.
Today, around 150,000 people in Sweden live with dementia, two-thirds of whom have Alzheimer’s disease. The number is expected to double by 2050, underscoring the importance of continued research and support.
