Start of the REAL AD validation study
February 3, 2026The REAL AD validation study is now underway! This is an important addition to the main study, also known as the REAL AD screening study. The purpose of the validation study is to compare the results from the new methods used in the screening study - digital memory tests performed from home and blood sampling in primary care - with established examination methods that are currently used in specialised care. This way, we can ensure that the new methods work well and provide sufficiently reliable results to be used in clinical practice in the future.
The validation study involves three visits to Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, two to the memory clinic in Mölndal and one to radiology, as well as follow-up visits after four years. During the visits, participants undergo detailed memory testing, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and spinal fluid sampling (lumbar puncture, see Figure 1). Since these methods are already used in healthcare, those who want to can receive their results.
Participants for the validation study are recruited randomly from among participants who have completed all steps of the screening study, and the first group of participants has now been invited to participate in the validation study while the screening study continues for all participants. Over the past few weeks, we have welcomed the first group to their initial visits at the Memory Clinic in Mölndal, and we will continue to invite participants in the coming months.
We would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere thanks for the positive commitment and great response we receive from our participants. Without you, the study would not be possible.
In connection with the start of the validation study, the REAL AD team has now expanded to include several new coordinators, nurses and a doctor who will meet and follow the participants throughout the study. We are very proud of our fantastic team.
